Karters return to action for BKA round four
Two weeks after competing in Rally Barbados for the first time as a co-driver, 16-year-old Hailey Brathwaite will be back behind the wheel on Sunday (June 14). After a seven-week break, the Barbados Karting Association (BKA) Sectus Technologies Championship resumes with round four at Bushy Park Barbados, scheduled for a 9.00am start.
Karting’s importance as the first rung on the motor sport ladder was acknowledged at last week’s BCIC RB26 Prizegiving when the teenager and her driver Daniel Ullyett (also 16), by far the youngest of the 116 competing crews, won a Spirit of the Rally award, celebrating the future of island motor sport.
While three-time BKA Champion Driver Ullyett has moved on, Brathwaite is a regular competitor in the Easykart 125cc class, currently led by Aaron Blackett, who eased three points ahead of 2024 Champion Jacob Mayers at the last round. Sunday’s 125cc class includes two female drivers, Kelilah Mayers returning for her first outing for the year.
The BKA’s ladder of opportunity starts with the Easykart 60cc Cadet class, which has been well-subscribed in recent years and also includes a newcomer this weekend in six-year-old Jean-Mark Thompson, whose father Mark is a former race and rally champion.
Sitting at the top of the Cadet class standings is Edward Norris, who also leads the Champion Driver title chase from 125cc front-runners Blackett and Mayers. The latter’s younger sister Ava is an impressive fourth overall after becoming the first female karter in the Club’s 40-year history to be the top points scorer at April’s third round.
