Female karters in the mix at BKA round five
The island’s budding trio of female kart racers will face off against their male counterparts once again on Sunday (September 21) as the Sectus Technologies Barbados Karting Association (BKA) Championship passes the half-way mark. Round five is scheduled to start at 8.00am at Bushy Park Barbados.
Ava Mayers, younger sister of reigning BKA Champion Driver Jacob, is competing in the Easykart 60cc Cadet class for the third time, growing in confidence with each outing. Last month, she claimed a pair of fourth-placed finishes and was the fourth-highest class points scorer for the day.
Also in action for the third time is Kelilah Mayers, who made her debut in June in the Easykart 125cc class, where Hailey Brathwaite, the most experienced of the three girls, will also compete. With some absentees from the regular roster of competitors, there is an excellent chance for each of them to improve on their season’s best results.
After four rounds and with 24 drivers now on the scoreboard, Calem Maloney leads the overall standings and the Easykart 125cc class with 385 points. He has won 13 of the 16 races run, the other victories claimed by reigning Champion Driver Jacob Mayers, his cousin Zak and, most recently last month, Cody Mark.
Neither of the Mayers boys will contest this Sunday’s race meet, as Zak has relocated to the UK to further his studies, while Jacob will miss this round to concentrate on his move up the motorsport ladder to the BimmaCup. Mark, therefore, and the consistent Aaron Blackett, will be Maloney’s main opposition.
While Maloney has a cushion of nearly 100 points in the class – Jacob Mayers is second with 288 – he leads the Champion Driver title chase by 42 points from Jordan Hinkson. With 343 points and nine race wins, Hinkson leads the Easykart 60cc Cadets, where the points are more evenly spread: six-time winner Jaydn Brathwaite is 67 points behind in second place, with Edward Norris (258pts), reigning class Champion Shamir Eversley (245pts) and Jaylan Priddee (240pts) all within striking distance.
Aeden Bruce leads the contenders in Easykart 100cc, which has not been as well subscribed this year as in the past; he has 240 points with Oliver Judd (186pts) second and Sebastien Clarke (134pts) third, Clarke having contested only two race meets.
