Karters keen for points before summer break

Drivers in the Sectus Technologies Barbados Karting Association (BKA) Championship reach the mid-point of their season on Sunday (June 23), when round five out of nine runs off at Bushy Park Barbados. With a seven-week break before the next Race Meet in August, everyone is keen to head into the summer holidays off the back of a good day’s racing and with a psychological advantage over their rivals.
With 342 points to his name, Zak Mayers leads the overall standings by 47 points from his cousin Jacob, these two also at the sharp end of the Easykart 100cc Juniors category, but both need to be wary of third-placed Calem Maloney, who is just 10 points behind Jacob. School studies caused     Maloney to miss the second round of the championship in March, so he has been playing catch-up since, having led after the first round. Maloney leads the Easykart 125cc Lights class, which is again the biggest class this weekend – there are 10 entries – in which he has been the dominant force, winning 10 of the 12 races he has entered; a sudden rainstorm in round four last month disrupted his 100 per cent record, with Mark Thompson winning twice. Maloney’s 285 points gives him a 41-point advantage over Aaron Blackett, who has been a consistent podium finisher this season, although is yet to win a race, something he shares with Sebastien Thompson, who is another three points behind.
Championship leader Mayers has a similar record in 100cc Juniors, although his nine race wins come from 16 starts. Cousin Jacob has won three times, while Aeden Bruce (third in class with 277 points and fourth in the overall standings) and Daniel Ullyett have won twice each in what has been the most competitive class this season, with races often won by mere inches.
Shamir Eversley leads the EasyKart 60cc Cadets class by a comfortable margin from Jordyn Hinkson, since second-placed Oliver Judd has graduated to the 100cc class; Jaydn Brathwaite returns for the first time this year to join the battle.
Sunday’s fifth round is scheduled for an 8.00am start.
