Sunday finale for teenagers battling over BKA title

Three of the Barbados Karting Association’s (BKA) talented teenagers will do battle for
the final time this year at Bushy Park Barbados on Sunday (November 5). Expect
fireworks at the St Philip facility as Reigning Champion 17-year-old Calem Maloney and
13-year-olds Blake Thompson and Daniel Ullyett settle the 2023 Champion Driver chase.
Just 14 points cover these three at the top of the overall standings of the Sectus
Technologies Championship after six hard-fought rounds. Since the first race meet in
March, more than 30 karters have raced at Bushy Park, with the 125cc Easykart Lights
class the best-subscribed of the BKA’s four classes.
Ullyett, who won the title in 2020 and ’21, has 501 points, leading the overall title
chase and the 100cc Easykart Juniors class, in which he races against Thompson, who
has 487 points. With only the second maximum score in a hotly competitive season -
100 points for four race wins in one day - 125cc Lights class leader Maloney drew level
with Thompson on 487 after round six in September.
Raizer Stoute is fourth overall with 462 points, also third in the 100cc Juniors class
behind Ullyett and Thompson, with the top six completed by Zak Mayers (441pts) and
Colin Bradshaw (426pts), who is second to Maloney in 125cc Lights. Mayers, who has
been steadily climbing the leader board since the start of the season, leads the 60cc
Cadets class by 26 points from his cousin Jacob.
BKA Chairman Barry Mayers is looking forward to the climax of the year’s competition
with mixed emotions: “It has been an exciting season, with some really close racing and
many different race winners. For the youngsters, there are lessons to be learned in
every race at every race meeting and we have seen plenty of that.
“But this will be the first time that the BKA family has been together since the passing
of Jamal ‘Kirby’ Brathwaite, who had been a fixture at our race meets for the last couple
of years encouraging a third generation of his family into motor sport. We will all be
thinking of him during the day. RIP Kirby.”
